The word “Cordel” refers to the strings, or “chords”, from which the small booklet containing the poem hangs. Image from: Mark J. Curran, Curran's Cordel Connection, retreived from http://researchguides.library.wisc.edu/cordel_literature on 08/20/2013
Each poem contains a piece of art on the front of the booklet, usually in black lithograph.
The cordel lithograph itself has become a special genre of art characteristic to the region. Image from: “Chapter 50: Brazil” (n.d.). Frank 151. Retrieved August 29, 2013 from http://www.frank151.com/book/chapter-50-brazil.html
