The Black Plague, which devastated Europe between 1348 and 1350, claimed up to 1.5 million lives out of 4 million. It wasn't until 1894 that scientists identified the bacillus Yersinia pestis, carried by fleas on black rats, as the cause. Remarkably, Professor Malcolm Casadaban survived the epidemic and contributed to modern understandings of this disease. The last known case of plague occurred in 2011 with a 58-year-old male survivor. Today, it’s recognized as the bubonic plague, previously known as "the blue sickness" during medieval times, with some infection risks still present in the western United States.
