  2. What is the purpose of taking notes? • To stay focused on what you are listening to while testing your understanding of the material • To review: reminds you what is important • Easier to remember own words • Act of writing notes assists the memory before studying has begun

  3. How do you know what is important during a lecture? • Instructor will provide clues • Anything written on board or screen • Repetition • Emphasis- both tone and time • Verbal Cues: • “Two points of views…” • “The three most influential people were…” • Summary or Review

  4. Develop a system • Cornell Method • Any others? • Some suggestions: • Brief: phrase over sentence, word over phrase • Abbreviations and symbols- keep it simple and consistant • Use your own words – except when? • Outline format

  5. What happens if you miss something? • Write down key words and phrases • Leave blank space • Ask a friend, your professor, or your TA after class

  6. How do you take notes from a text? • Is there a difference between annotating literature and taking notes from a text book?
