  1. Promoting ColdFusion to the Outside of the ColdFusion Community

  2. Ground Rules for Tonight's BOF • We are here to discuss ideas for ColdFusion developers and the CF developer community as a whole to promote ColdFusion to the unconverted... outside of our own community. • This BOF will NOT discuss Adobe's efforts to promote ColdFusion...

  3. Ground Rules, Part 2 • This BOF is scheduled to only last an hour!!! • I was told we CAN stay around if we want to, but the last shuttle leaves at 11pm. • We've got a lot of material to cover!  That said, we won't have time for panelists to wax poetic.  This will not be your typical panel discussion.  NO TALKING HEADS!!! •  Instead of a panel discussion...

  4. This is a Brainstorming Session • Concepts are outlined here:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brainstorming • Focus on quantity • NO CRITICISM OF IDEAS IS ALLOWED • Unusual ideas are welcomed • Team members may add to, combine and improve upon other ideas • The ideas are collected and recorded, then edited into bullet points • Then, these ideas are voted upon by the team • The top 3 ideas are then broken down, and a strategy is created based on them.

  5. For our Brainstorming Session: • Panelists will serve as the captains and co-captains of your teams. • At least one team member will record all ideas. • Time permitting, the teams will work out a community strategy for promoting ColdFusion to the target audience you have, using the top 3 voted ideas, which will be recorded. • Teams will consist of experts (panelists) and the audience members.  EVERYONE participates. • Historically, we'd use white boards, Sharpies and Post-it notes, but those things aren't available.  We'll instead record everything using Google Docs.  Our final results will be recorded in Google Docs.

  6. Inspiration for tonight… • You cannot ignore the snubs in the media this year that seem so completely out of touch with the ColdFusion reality: • Computer World Article:http://www.computerworld.com/action/article.do?command=viewArticleBasic&articleId=9020942&pageNumber=1 • Software Developer Article:http://www.softwaredeveloper.com/features/ghosts-in-machine-071207/ • Sys-con Dropping CFDJ for Silverlight DJ:http://coldfusion.sys-con.com/read/426141.htm • Sys-con's response to the CF developer community:http://search.sys-con.com/read/427080.htm

  7. ColdFusion Target Markets are: • Identify the potential target markets for ColdFusion: • Large businesses • Government - Federal, state/province/region, county/city • Education • Small/Medium business • Consulting companies, freelancers • Hosting companies

  8. ColdFusion Target Audiences? • IT Management of medium/large companies • Small Business • Government workers - Officials, civil servants  • Developers who don’t use ColdFusion now, including: • Consultants (including agencies, freelancers and web development companies) • Developers who don’t know much about CF or based their knowledge on notions that are no longer true • Designers who occasionally develop dynamic web sites • Beginners • Students • College Faculty, Instructors and trainers • Any others???

  9. Let’s vote!!! Vote your top 3… • IT Management of medium/large companies • Small Business • Government workers - Officials, civil servants  • Developers who don’t use ColdFusion now, including: • Consultants (including agencies, freelancers and web development companies) • Developers who don’t know much about CF or based their knowledge on notions that are no longer true • Designers who occasionally develop dynamic web sites • Beginners • Students • College Faculty, Instructors and trainers • Any others???

  10. Break into teams… • Take the top 3 audiences… one team each! • Move into three groups… • Pick the group you want to join… • Teams should be evenly numbered…

  11. Your team… • For the next 15 minutes, come up with as many ideas that would promote ColdFusion to the audience of your chosen team • Focus on: • Who, What, Where, Why, When and How. • Remember, record ALL ideas • We’ll use Google Docs…

  12. Over the next 5 minutes… • Take your ideas, edit them, combine them as needed

  13. In the next 10 minutes… • Each of you should vote for your top 5 ideas

  14. For the rest of the session… • Take the ideas that received the top votes… • Build out your ideas into a working strategy • Use your expert panelists to help bounce ideas off of and guide the buildout of the idea • Continue to work in the Google docs, to flush out the idea.
