  3. Barrier #1: Failed Motivation

  4. “But, I am already a Christian!” 1. Unity: A. The Lord’s Prayer: Division Is A Barrier To Evangelism “I do not pray for these alone, but also for those who will believe in Me through their word; that they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me.” (John 17:20-21) B. Unity Enhances the Work of the Church “Now the whole earth had one language and one speech. ... And the LORD said, ‘Indeed the people are one and they all have one language, and this is what they begin to do; now nothing that they propose to do will be withheld from them.’” (Genesis 11:1-6)

  5. “One church is as good as another” 2. Salvation: A. Division Is Not Acceptable: Now I plead with you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment. (I Corinthians 1:10) B. Believing False Doctrine Can Condemn You or Me And their message will spread like cancer. Hymenaeus and Philetus are of this sort, who have strayed concerning the truth, saying that the resurrection is already past; and they overthrow the faith of some. (II Timothy 2:17-18; also, Galatians 5:4; Matthew 7:21-23; Luke 6:39)

  6. “I don’t argue about religion!” 1. Inappropriate Fighting is Condemned: And a servant of the Lord must not quarrel but be gentle to all, able to teach, patient, … (II Timothy 2:24) 2. However, We Must Correct and Contend: … in humility correcting those who are in opposition, if God perhaps will grant them repentance, so that they may know the truth, and that they may come to their senses and escape the snare of the devil, having been taken captive by him to do his will. (II Timothy 2:25-26) Beloved, … I found it necessary to write to you exhorting you to contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints. (Jude 1:3)

  7. Tip #1: Watch your speech and tone Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one. (Colossians 4:6)

  8. Barrier #2: Wrong Standard

  9. “I feel this is right!” 1. Our feelings cannot be trusted: There is a way that seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death. (Proverbs 14:12; also, Proverbs 16:2; Jeremiah 10:23) 2. For example, Paul was sincerely wrong: Then Paul, looking earnestly at the council, said, “Men and brethren, I have lived in all good conscience before God until this day.” (Acts 23:1) “I persecuted this Way to the death, binding and delivering into prisons both men and women …” (Acts 22:4) … I was formerly a blasphemer, a persecutor, and an insolent man; but I obtained mercy because I did it ignorantly in unbelief. (I Timothy 1:13)

  10. About Parents and Traditions 1. Who comes first, Jesus or Ancestry? “If anyone comes to Me and does nothate his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he cannot be My disciple.” (Luke 14:26; also, Galatians 1:13-14) 2. Whose traditions comes first, God’s or man’s? He answered and said to them, “Why do you also transgress the commandment of God because of your tradition? … ‘And in vain they worship Me, Teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’” (Matthew 15:3, 9)

  11. “All Christians believe this!” 1. Previously, God condemned the world and saved only 8! …who formerly were disobedient, when once the Divine longsuffering waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight souls, were saved through water. (I Peter 3:20) 2. Jesus has foretold that only a few will go to heaven! “Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it.” (Matthew 7:13-14) Lesson: The majority and sheer numbers mean nothing to God.

  12. “As long as you are doing your best …” 1. How do you know you are doing your “best”? For I know nothing against myself, yet I am not justified by this; but He who judges me is the Lord. (I Corinthians 4:4) 2. Sincerity and good works in Jesus’ name is not enough! “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’ And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’” (Matthew 7:21-23) Lesson: Obey the standard by which we will be judged (John 12:48)

  13. Tip #2: Speak to each person. Then Jesus, (1) looking at him, (2) loved him, and (3) said to him, “One thing you lack: Go your way, sell whatever you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, take up the cross, and follow Me.” (Mark 10:21) Now we exhort you, brethren, warn those who are unruly, comfort the fainthearted, uphold the weak, be patient with all. (I Thessalonians 5:14) And on some have compassion, making a distinction; but others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire, hating even the garment defiled by the flesh. (Jude 1:22-23)

  14. “I am led by the Holy Spirit, not the Bible” 1. How do you know it is the Holy Spirit leading you? • Could be the Devil or his servants!(II Thessalonians 2:9-12; II Corinthians 11:13-15) • Could be yourself! (Jeremiah 14:14; 23:16-36; 29:8-9) 2. Modern revelation cannot contradict the ancient. But even if we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel to you than what we have preached to you, let him be accursed. As we have said before, so now I say again, if anyone preaches any other gospel to you than what you have received, let him be accursed.   15. Tip #3: Adapt! For though I am free from all men, I have made myself a servant to all, that I might win the more; and to the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might win Jews; to those who are under the law, as under the law, that I might win those who are under the law; to those who are without law, as without law (not being without law toward God, but under law toward Christ), that I might win those who are without law; to the weak I became as weak, that I might win the weak. I have become all things to all men, that I might by all means save some. Now this I do for the gospel's sake, that I may be partaker of it with you. (I Corinthians 9:19-23)

  16. “Words cannot contain the infinite God!” 1. The Bible contains only what we need to know. … as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue (II Peter 1:3; also, II Timothy 3:16-17) 2. God said we could understand when we read! … how that by revelation He made known to me the mystery (as I have briefly written already, by which, when you read, you may understand my knowledge in the mystery of Christ), which in other ages was not made known to the sons of men, as it has now been revealed by the Spirit to His holy apostles and prophets (Ephesians 3:3-5)

  17. “That is your interpretation!” 1. There is only one interpretation – God’s intended. … God, who cannot lie … (Titus 1:2; Hebrews 6:17-18) 2. We must give diligence to understand it! … be diligent to be found by Him in peace, without spot and blameless; … as also our beloved brother Paul, according to the wisdom given to him, has written to you, as also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things, in which are some things hard to understand, which untaught and unstable people twist to their own destruction, as they do also the rest of the Scriptures. You therefore, beloved, since you know this beforehand, beware lest you also fall from your own steadfastness, being led away with the error of the wicked; (II Peter 3:14-18; also, II Timothy 2:15)

  18. Tip #4: Do Your Homework! But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear … (I Peter 3:15)
