  1. Climate Change Study Cell Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) Dr. A.K.M. Saiful Islam Dr. Abed Hussain Institute of Water and Flood Management (IWFM)

Introduction • Climate Change Cell of Department of Environment (DOE) has requested to take initiative to coordinate climate change related activities of BUET under one umbrella. • Climate Change Study Cell will start its journey in 2008. • By the year, 2009 it may be converted into a fully independent Center in BUET.

  3. Vision The vision of the Climate Change Study Cell is to establish itself as the premier knowledge center on climate change risk and adaptation for Bangladesh.

  4. Mission • To improve knowledge about climate change and associated risk to Bangladesh; • To increase awareness of the planners, policy makers about the effects of climate change; • To become institutional home for climate modeling and predicting future scenarios; • To strengthen capacity of professionals in climate change modeling; and • To share knowledge and expertise with other organizations.

Training on Modeling Activities: • Organizing a TOT at BUET in April/May 2008 • Regional climate model PRECIS workshop in collaboration with Hadley Center, UK (Contact: David Hein) • Scenarios setup for Bangladesh using CRA model in collaboration with Adaptation & Impacts Research Division (AIRD), University of Toronto (Contact: Monirul Qader Mirza) • Organization a training for other organizations in September /October 2008 • Regional climate model RegCM training in collaboration with The Abdus Salam ICTP, Italy (Contact: Prof. F. Giorgi)

  11. Outcomes: By 2008 capacity building of a group of modelers in different agencies of Bangladesh capable of simulating climate change scenarios and assess their impact in different sectors.
