  2. The Problem • 2 Billion dollars are spent each year to catch, house, euthanize, and dispose of homeless animals in America, an average of $250 per animal. • 8 Million dogs and cats are euthanized every year. That’s one for every guest at 120 VT home games. • For every child that is born, seven puppies and kittens are born.

  3. The Problem • Pet overpopulation is not an owner problem, a shelter problem, or a veterinarian problem. • It is a community problem that impacts all of us!

  4. Mountain View Humane The Problem How can we make change for the better? • We can never adopt our way out of euthanasia. • We can’t ignore the problem.

  5. Mountain View Humane The Solution Aggressive Spay/Neuter • Sterilization is the best defense against all sources of overpopulation in our community. • Sterilization minimizes health risks and the cost for caring for unwanted animals.

  6. Mountain View Humane The Solution Aggressive Spay/Neuter • 18,000 animals can be sterilized in a low cost spay neuter clinic each year at maximum capacity. • Every 1,000 procedures performed at MVH that would not have been otherwise leads to at least 500 fewer animals taken into a shelter over time.* This leads to not only a reduction in intake, but also in euthanasia. *Firepaw Analysis

  7. We Can Help! • MVH is built on the experience and mentorship of Humane Alliance. • Humane Alliance has been successful for 16 years and started 72 clinics across the U.S. and Canada.

  8. We Can Help! • The Waldron-Ricci Spay Neuter Clinic is a low cost, high volume, high quality clinic that will be opening in August and operated by MVH.

  9. We Can Help! • Phase one of the service area will be Montgomery, Floyd, Pulaski, and Giles Counties. • The problem must be attacked by not only Montgomery County but its neighbors as well.

  10. We Can Help! • 85% of animals that come to a low cost clinic would never have seen a veterinarian without this service. • The goal is to turn no one away for the inability to pay. The need for ongoing funding to subsidize the lowest income population cannot be avoided.

  11. Decreasing birth rates through spaying and neutering is the only way to successfully control dog and cat overpopulation and halt the killing of adoptable animals.

  12. How You Can Help! • To help MVH open its doors in August, financial contributions are needed as well as items from our Wish List available online. • To help MVH serve the population that needs its services most, subsidies for low income households are needed. • Animal Control Officers need to promote the service in areas where the most strays are picked up. Fliers and coupons will be provided.
