  1. Relevant Ingredients for Algal Cultures Frederic Mößbbe Moldaenke / FH KielBiomonitoring Workshop 201031st May, 2010

  2. previous ingredients experiments an additional ingredient Development of a new nutrient solution

  3. PreviousIngredients ingredients were...: • CaCl2*2H2O (Calcium chloride dihydrate) • CO(NH2)2 (Urea) • K2HPO4 (Dipotassium phosphate) • KH2PO4 (Monopotassium phosphate) • MgSO4*7H2O (Heptahydrate) • “Woods Hole” • problem between algae and nutrient solution 5: • previous nutrient solution was unstable

  4. Experiments theory: nickel is missing from nutrient solution 5 • comparison between: • nutrient solution 5, • nutrient solution 5 with 0.4 µg nickel concentration • acidic/alkaline solution

  5. Experiments Test set-up • measurements: • volume of fermenter in l • algae concentration in µg/l

  6. Experiments • calculation of growth rate r: • growth rate r in µg*l/h • volume flow in l/h • algae concentration c in µg/l • volume of fermenter V in l

  7. Experiments • results: • nutrient solution 5 with nickel is similar to acidic/alkaline solution

  8. Experiments to discover the correct nickel concentration • comparison between: • nutrient solution 5 with 0.4 µg nickel concentration, • nutrient solution 5 with 0.8 µg nickel concentration, • nutrient solution 5 with 1.2 µg nickel concentration

  9. Experiments • result: • nutrient solution with 0.8 µg and 1.2 µg nickel are almost equal

  10. Additional Ingredient ingredients are now: • 116.0 mg CaCl2*2H2O (Calcium chloride dihydrate) • 5,000 mg CO(NH2) 2 (Urea) • 2,400 mg K2HPO4 (Dipotassium phosphate) • 1,533 mg KH2PO4 (Monopotassium phosphate) • 2,000 mg MgSO4*7H2O (Heptahydrate) • 10.0 ml “Woods Hole” • 1 µg Nickel

  11. Many thanks for your attention
