  2. We Have 9 planets: Mercury • Earth • Mars • Jupiter • Saturn • Uranus • Venus • Pluto • Neptune

What We Will Find Out About Each Planet: • What is the Environment of the Planet. • What is the climate of the Planet • What type of Orbit the planet has speed/rotation type. • How far the planet is from the sun and how large/small the planet is. • Any special or unusual facts about the planet.

  4. Earth • Earth is the third planet from the sun. • Earth is the fifth largest planet • Earth surface: only planet with water on surface, and 71% covered with water. Also composed of mountains, plains, swamps and deserts. • Orbital speed: 29.8 km/sec • Climate: average climate is 13 deg. C (55.4 deg F). Because of greenhouse effect earth’s temperature is raised 35 deg. C (95 deg. F). Without greenhouse effect earth would be a much colder planet, like Mars. • There is life on earth because there is the necessary gases for life such as oxygen, hydrogen and a balance of carbon dioxide. Earth also has a suitable climate for life.

  5. Special facts About Earth • Earth’s time is gradually slowing down. Every few yrs. a second is added to make up for lost time, so that millions of yrs. From now a day will be 27 hrs. long. • Earth has existed for 150-200 million yrs. And life on Earth has only existed 5-10% of earth’s lifetime. • There is life on earth because there is the necessary gases for life such as oxygen, hydrogen and a balance of carbon dioxide. Earth also has a suitable climate for life.

Mars is known as the Red Planet because of it’s deep red color. • Orbit:Eliptical • Atmosphere: Very thin, much like earth , only more carbon dioxide and no greenhouse effect which makes it one of the coldest planets, unlike earth. • Climate:Much like earth only seasons last 2X as long in martian yrs. • In winter:Mars has polar ice caps that will condense at night and evaporate into water vapor in the day. Special Facts About Mars • There is evidence of many traces of dried up water areas on Mars, such as dried up springs, gullies, lakes and even photographic evidence of possible present bodies of water. • Because of Mars possibility of liquid water evidence and it’s – Atmosphere and climate simi- larities to earth scientists hypothesize possible past life habitation and a favorable planet for human habitation.

  8. Saturn • Second largest planet in the solar system and 6th planet from the sun. • Orbital Speed: 9.7 km/sec. One day is 10hrs. 14mins and 1 yr is 29.5 earth days. • Environment: Saturn is the only planet that is less dense than water. • Saturn is composed mostly of gases, mainly hydrogen and small amt. of helium and methane.

  9. Saturn Continued • Climate: Wind blows at high speeds on Saturn with velocity of 500m per sec. (1,100 mph). Special Facts • Saturn was first discovered to have 18 moons, but 4 more were found in 2000 and 9 more this yr. yielding a total of 31 moons. • Saturn’s rings are hypothesized to be particles of an old moon that had a collision and smashed apart to pieces 50 mill. Yrs. Ago. • Saturn’s rings orbit in different tilts.

Special Facts About Jupiter • There is a high pressure region of clouds moving counter clockwise known as the “Great Red Spot” and it stretches 12,000 by 25,000km in length and is possibly made of Red phosphorus. • The Rapid rotation of clouds on Jupiter causes belts and zones that encircle the planet parallel to the equator. • One of Jupiter’s largest moon’s Europa is 3138km in diameter , and it is covered in ice on it’s surface. Scientists say that under the ice layer there may be liquid water, which may support life.

  14. Pluto • Pluto is the smallest planet. It is only 2300km wide in diameter and has the smallest mass w/ .0022 g/kg in density. • Orbit: Revolves on it’s axis, like Uranus, and at a 122.5 deg. Tilt. One side of Pluto gets extreme periods of darkness. • Distance from Sun: Farthest planet from sun (3.67 bill. miles away), orbits with Neptune around sun and it takes 6.39 days for a full rotation and 247.8 yrs. To revolve around the sun.

  16. Pluto Continued • Environment: No space probes have succeeded to land on Pluto, so not much is known about the planet (estimated to happen 2015). It is observed to be a planet covered in ice like it’s moon Charon. • Climate:. Avg. temp. believed to be (-378/-396d.F) Believed to be composed of primarily nitrogen (98%) and small amts. Of methane and (C02). • Special Facts:Many astronomers believe Pluto is not a planet but either a star one of the 44 dwarf planets which are planets scientists know of but have not named or studied. (More Facts will be discussed)
