  1. PALM3000 Realignment Winter 2007-2008 Jenny Roberts Optical Bench Team: C. Baranec, A. Bouchez, K. Bui, R. Burruss, R. Dekany, M. Troy Layout Design: A. Moore

  2. Background The purpose of the work on the AO bench this winter is to accommodate the SWIFT and P1640 science instruments. This requires: • Moving the OAPs, FM2, TTM and DM to new positions for SWIFT focus • Making additions to the stimulus capability • Re-coating all the mirrors • Modifying the enclosure

  3. Focus Change Changing the location of science focus requires moving PHARO to a new location • In order to have room for the SWIFT mounting pads, PHARO will be shifted forward in its support structure • The FM3 location will be modified so that only PHARO’s position along the beam will change

  4. Space Requirements Because the new science instruments will use the entire width of the bench, the following are required in order to make space for the instruments: • Removable PHARO FM3 mount • Already in the machine shop • Removal of part of the current enclosure • This requires a removable FM3 enclosure for PHARO

  5. Other requirements SWIFT has no X-Y adjustment with respect the to beam, so the stimulus must be remotely adjustable in X-Y. In order to complete this work before SWIFT arrives, it will be done in off the bench in parallel with the relay realignment. This means that we will need an interim simulated-telescope-light source to use for the relay alignment while the stimulus package is being modified.

  6. Schedule Highlights November • Stimulus • Review stimulus requirements - DONE • Design stimulus • SSMs • Design and procure SSMs • Mechanical • Design and build FM3 mount - DONE • Optical Bench • Document optic and mount locations, test WFS installation - DONE • Relayout plan review December • Stimulus • Stimulus PDR • Procure stimulus components • Mechanical • Design PHARO mount modifications • Manufacture PHARO mount parts • Design FM3 enclosure

  7. Schedule Highlights December cont. • Optical Bench • Remove stimulus plate and install temporary stimulus • Replace DM with flat • Unmount PHARO • Remove optics, inspect, mark, pack and ship January • Stimulus • Install sources • Mechanical • Modify and test PHARO mount • Modify interim main enclosure • Build FM3 enclosure • Design, machine and test fit SWIFT cart standoffs • Optical Bench • Install SWIFT mounting pads • Install FM3 mount • Reposition WFS, OAP mounts, FSM, FM2, DM-flat (FARO) • Reinstall OAPs • Realign relay optics

  8. Schedule Highlights February • Stimulus • Integrate and test stimulus with lab system • SSMs • Integrate and test SSMs with lab system • Mechanical • Test-fit FM3 enclosure and SWIFT cart standoffs • Optical • Continue to realign relay optics • Install and align new SSMs • Remount PHARO • Reinstall DM March • Optical Bench • Install Enclosures • Reinstall stimulus plate • Commissioning • Verify PALM-241 / PHARO laboratory performance April • Commissioning • Verify PALM-241 / PHARO on-sky performance (April 9th)
