    2. Know Your Airports Pilots live to tell about dangers in the pattern By AOPA ePublishing staff Airplanes converging on final approach can find themselves in precarious spots. On a few occasions, theyve flown so close theyve gotten stuck together. On May 15, a Piper Cherokee landed on top of a Stinson at Northwest Regional Airport in Roanoke, Texas. The Piper was carrying a flight instructor and a student while only the pilot was aboard the Stinson. The Piper was apparently landing while the Stinson was starting its takeoff, according to press reports. The final approach path is obscured by trees. Luckily, no one was seriously injured.     3. Runway Incursions In September 2007, the FAA released its Runway Safety Report, examining runway incursions at towered airports between fiscal years 2003 and 2006. There were 1,306 runway incursions during the period. Although general aviation's contribution was proportional to its share of total flight operations, no incursion is acceptable. While the FAA report notes that the rate of incursions has remained relatively constant, the November 2007 Aviation Runway and Ramp Safety report by the Government Accountability Office notes that preliminary FAA data for fiscal year 2007 indicate a disturbing upward trend.

However, an aircraft that was not originally certificated with an engine-driven electrical system or which has not subsequently been certified with a system installed may conduct operations within a Mode C veil provided the aircraft remains outside Class A, B, or C airspace; and below the altitude of the ceiling of a Class B or Class C airspace area designated for an airport or 10,000 feet MSL, whichever is lower.
