  1. Radiation Physics Beam TestsJ. Bauer, J. Liu, L. Nicolas, S. Rokni, M. Santana ESTB Workshop 2011 March 17, 2011

  2. Introduction • RP has been a user of primary and secondary beams at SLAC test beam facilities (FFTB, ESA). Last experiments were T489, T493 • RP also conducted experiments at other labs, e.g. CERN (CERF) and PAL (PHERF) • Previous collaborations with KEK, PAL, CERN and Tsinghua • The main purpose is benchmarking of Monte Carlo codes that are used in the design/optimization of facilities (personal and environmental radiation protection) ESTB Workshop 2011, March 17, 2011

  3. Recent related research examples (I) Irradiation experiment T489 (28 GeV) at ESA. Benchmarking of activation and residual dose rates ESTB Workshop 2011, March 17, 2011

  4. Recent related research examples (II) Irradiation experiment (2.5 GeV) at PHERF in Pohang Accelerator Laboratory (S. Korea) to study activation of environmental samples and benchmark FLUKA Monte Carlo intra-nuclear cascade code. Analysis is under way. Further experiments seem necessary to better understand possible FLUKA underestimation of 3H generation as well as of some other radio-isotopes ESTB Workshop 2011, March 17, 2011

  5. Areas of interest • Activation and damage measurements • Activation of accelerator components and environmental samples • Damage to electronics and magnets • Shielding measurements: attenuation of muons, neutrons, etc • Measurements of radiation source terms: • Photomuon production: Crucial for shielding of HE e- beams at zero degree angles (e.g. LCLS) • Neutron spectrameasurements at HE (TOF) • Photonuclear production, angular spectra. ESTB Workshop 2011, March 17, 2011

  6. 3 experiments in 3 years 1 2 3 • Activation and damage measurements • Activation of accelerator components and environmental samples • Damage to electronics and magnets • Shielding measurements: attenuation of muons, neutrons, etc • Measurements of radiation source terms: • Photomuon production: Crucial for shielding of HE e- beams at zero degree angles (e.g. LCLS) • Neutron spectrameasurements at HE (TOF) • Photonuclear production, angular spectra.
