  2. What Is Client Consultation? • More than just client feedback / input • Involving clients (service users, carers etc) in • Key decision making processes • Service development / planning • Service review

  3. How Do We Currently Consult With Out Clients? • Annual questionnaire • Feedback not client consultation • Clients on Board / steering committee • Avoid tokenism?

  4. Why Do We Need To Consult With Clients? • Service Agreements • Indicate this is a mandatory expectation • Disability Service Standards • Clients have a right to have service input and to have a say in the development of service direction • Disability State Plan • Expectation that services create opportunities and provide support to client so meaningful participation can occur • Other Quality Standards • “Quality” can only exist if the service meets clients’ needs.

  5. What Are The Benefits? • We can ensure that the service is developing in a way which is relevant to clients; • We can identify service barriers; • We can create opportunities for clients so that the clients feel “valued” and be involved in the service; • Service development can occur in a way which is “client focused” and meets the changing needs of the clients.

  6. What Are The Challenges For “Meaningful” Client Consultation? • How do we support clients with cognitive impairments? • How and where do we start?
