Renewable Energy Vocabulary • Solar Panel: A cluster of solar cells that arrange in a panel that can be oriented towards the sun. • Absorber: A blackened surface on a collector that absorbs solar energy and turns it into heat energy. • Renewable Energy: Energy derived from resources that are naturally regenerated such as flowing water and wind. • Wind Turbine: A machine that captures the force of wind to generate electricity. • Efficiency: The ratio of output power in electricity to the input of sunlight (usually a percentage).

  3. Main Ideas • Renewable energy is a better source for energy than fossil fuels. We are trying to make them more convenient to use. • The main renewable energy sources are wind, solar, and water power. • The main problem with renewable energy sources is that they are expensive and you have to have an ideal location.

  4. Main Ideas Continued • The main problem with non-renewable energy sources is that we are running out of them and they pollute the earth. • The main renewable sources are all dependent upon or involve the Sun.

  6. Solar Water Heater Experiment • For our group experiment we made a solar water heater. Using two 2-liter bottles, tin-foil, plastic wrap, black tubing, and a lot of cotton we made a solar water heater. Our goal was to have make the temperature of the water rise at least a degree. Our constants in the experiment were the amount of sunlight and water. An independent variable was the amount of time in the sun. The dependent variable was the temperature of the water. We concluded that for every five minutes in the sun, the water rises one degree. Our hypothesis was correct.

  8. Renewable Energy Summary • The world is trying to transition more into renewable energy sources. This is because renewable energy sources such as solar, water, and wind power are good for the environment. However, they are expensive and need to be in a good location. However, we are improving them and making them more useable. The main problem with non-renewable energy sources like fossil fuels is that we are running out of them quickly and they pollute the environment.
