The legacy • Steitz knew her paper would be influential as she began to design it; she introduced the idea of the mRNA-rRNA hybrid in scientific lectures and there was a lot of interest demonstrated within the field. • The paper’s evidence for an active role of the rRNA in the ribosomal placement on mRNA was instrumental to the current understanding of the ribosome as an RNA-based machine.
