  1. Simulation Project # 1 – Research Tips • Start with the cheap/easy Internet search • “How many ag-gag laws are there?” • But don’t rely on these “wiki” sources only • Incomplete – different definitions of what constitutes an ag-gag law • Maybe out-of-date

  2. Follow-up the cites you find • Gather enacted statutes (& related statutes) • Iowa – ‘ 717A.3 was not the only relevant provision in Iowa • Look at annotations • If pending/“dead” bills cited – follow-up just to be sure • State legislative website - http://house.mo.gov/ • Westlaw Next - http://lawschool.westlaw.com/desktopdefault.aspx • Journal searches • Westlaw “jlr” database • SSRN (pending & published articles (free!!!)) – www.ssrn.com • Google Scholar • Free to search but might pull up a database behind a paywall

  3. Hints re research presentation • For the most part your research memo formats worked well. • Keep in mind that your reader doesn’t know everything what’s in your mind so you need to make sure that: • Your format presents things clearly – TO THE READER • You might need a sentence or so of explanation to clarify potentially murky/contestable issues • When mentioning the “other statutes” that might be relevant – drop a cite to them even if you don’t discuss • Allows the reader to follow-up if needed
