Idioms- a phrase or groups of words- has a special meaning that is different from what it appears to mean Example: Lately it has been raining cats and dogs. “raining cats and dogs” means that it is raining hard When we determine the meaning of Idioms we use • Context clues • Common sense: could this really happen? Lets CFU!

Steps for determining meaning of idiom When Brian got the math test he said, “this will be a piece of cake because I studied so hard.” • Step 1: Read the passage • Step 2 Identify the underlined idiom • Step 3 Use context clues and common sense to determine the meaning of idiom • Step 4 choose the correct answer • Taking the test was a surprise b.
