  1. 5.28.14 • STUDENTS • I can’t talk. Like, I seriously can’t talk. • So pay attention and read carefully.

  2. Today • Explanation of your last Bio project this year

  3. Cardiovascular and Pulmonary project • Essentially, this project is you, in groups, addressing each of the objectives from • 6.2, and • 6.4

  4. 6.2 (Most of this you covered on your heart posters) ★Draw and label a diagram of the heart showing the four chambers, associated blood vessels, valves and the route of blood through the heart. ★State that the coronary arteries supply heart muscle with oxygen and nutrients. ★Explain the action of the heart in terms of collecting blood, pumping blood, and opening and closing of valves. ★Outline the control of the heartbeat in terms of myogenic muscle contraction, the role of the pacemaker, nerves, the medulla of the brain and epinephrine (adrenaline). ★Explain the relationship between the structure and function of arteries, capillaries and veins. ★State that blood is composed of plasma, erythrocytes, leucocytes (phagocytes and lymphocytes) and platelets. ★State that the following are transported by the blood: nutrients, oxygen, carbon dioxide, hormones, antibodies, urea and heat.

  5. 6.4 (This is what we covered yesterday) ★Distinguish between ventilation, gas exchange and cell respiration. ★Explain the need for a ventilation system. ★Describe the features of alveoli that adapt them to gas exchange ★Draw and label a diagram of the ventilation system, including trachea, lungs, bronchi, bronchioles and alveoli ★Explain the mechanism of ventilation of the lungs in terms of volume and pressure changes caused by the internal and external intercostal muscles, the diaphragm and abdominal muscles.

So what do we need to do? • Thoroughly address each objective, paying close attention to the COMMAND TERMS • EXAMPLES • State that the coronary arteries supply heart muscle with oxygen and nutrients.Versus • Explain the relationship between the structure and function of arteries, capillaries and veins

  7. So what do we need to do? • Thoroughly address 2 problems that can occur • 1 with the heart • 1 with the lungs • These will be assigned soon (but there’s plenty of work for you to do know covering how things work PROPERLY before we cover what happens when things DON’T work.

  8. How are you going to go about this? • I would recommend you split up the responsibilities evenly, but you can split them up however you would like. • You need to create, by NEXT FRIDAY, JUNE 6TH a polished, cohesive project in a digital formto cover all of these objectives • Stop motion video • Regular video • Close up ‘whiteboard’ video • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6vZ0iqUS6sg • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QY0oCWP5RQk • NOT a power point!!!

What is Mr. McGuire going to do to support you? • Every day that we’re working on this in class, you need a SPECIFIC OBJECTIVE (FROM 6.2 OR 6.4) that you are working to cover/draw/animate/explain/etc, or you will not be getting credit • You are more than welcome to use phones to take pictures or video • SOME OF THE GROUPS DID NOT DO A GOOD JOB OF INTEGRATING THEIR WORK (WE’LL review good and bad examples over the next couple of days)

So what will I be looking for? • Overall quality/consistency in presentation • Objectives covered IN ORDER for the sake of consistency, and to make sure you’ve covered everything (both for yourselves and as I grade) • Every objective covered appropriately per the command term • Heart and Lung diseases covered simply and carefully in a way that shows understanding of how they normally function (for example, if there is a hole between the right and left atrium, you should be able to explain why that’s a problem) • Some polish/entertainment/humor/etc in the project

  11. Keep in mind • The objective of this project is to make sure EVERYONE knows the content backwards and forwards. Splitting up the objectives is great, but you need to make sure that everyone knows each part, or you’re missing the point!!! • All of the objectives are listed in your book, online, and in this powerpoint, and again, you are to cover all of the IB objectives from • 6.2: Heart (Cardiovascular) • 6.4: Lungs (Pulmonary)

  12. THIS IS QUITE AN UNDERTAKING • I will most likely NOT be here tomorrow • Your time should be spent in your groups, working specifically on objectives for this project. I will have teachers check in, and will ask the substitute for specific feedback about your work. DO NOT DISAPPOINT ME.
