  1. INTRODUCTION TO TECHNOLOGY- a study in contradictions • Its importance and pervasiveness are universally accepted features of our world. • National security • Economic power and competitive position • National development –standard of living and quality of life • Technology is the principal source of innovation and the key to success and survival.

  2. Our effectiveness in generation and exploiting technology is acause for continuing concern. • How effective are we? • Have we improved over the past years? • Are we not as effective as we were? • Relatively • comparatively

  3. Countercurrents of concern regarding technology • Technology is not an unmixed blessing, it must be guided and constrained lest its capacity for harm get out of hand.

  4. And yet ... • We question management’s commitment to adequate support. • We fear too much emphasis on the short term. • We worry about management’s competence in managing technology.

  5. Aknowledgments of technology • In war • In business • International competitiveness • Of the individual enterprise • Of a specific nation • Of international groups • Context: internal dynamics vs. External dynamics

  6. Forbes – XVIIth Anniversary • Status of 100 larges U.S. Companies in 1917 • 78% dropout The fragil and transitory nature of technological advantage is now accepted as possibly the most important source of competitive decline.

  7. Attributes of technology that provoke anxiety • Technology is rigorous and esoteric. • Technology is usually associated with innovation, which is a complex, poorly understood process that is fraught with risk and uncertainty.

  8. Until recently technology has been almost invisible in business school curricula as well as in management development programs. • Technical schools believe they already lack sufficient time to give engineers or scientists the basic substantive knowledge they need without diverting time to management considerations.

  9. The purpose of the book • It attempts a balanced treatment of a subject that is usually presented from a narrower perspective, e.g., • innovation • R & D • Productivity • New ventures

  10. 3 Responses to Technology Management Challenges • What’s wrong? • At the national level • At the individual level -managers • Management bashing • -no more short-sighted, lack vision managers • New managers to wield a machete – to hack away at unproductive assets and people that business can no longer afford.

  11. The principle incentive ... • To show that we need a more comprehensive, more systems-oriented view of technology • What it is • How it fits in with other activities in a business • What role it should play in a successful enterprise
