  6. Electives • 6th grade is allowed to choose 1 elective for the year • Art, Band, Choir, Orchestra, Theater Arts • All electives are beginner classes • Meet every day and receive a numerical grade • Some electives require after school commitments • Cannot be changed after the second week of school • Due to the high demand of certain electives, placement in elective courses will be limited based on availability.

  7. Physical Education • Students pay a $15 fee at the beginning of the year for their PE uniform, lock for locker and laundry service. • Students will dress out daily in their PE uniform. Other Opportunities • Competitive Training PE – this class is designed for students wanting to play a team sport in junior high (football, volleyball, basketball, track, tennis, soccer) • Presidential Fitness Standards used to determine eligibility • Students will run more and train like an off-season athletics class • Parents will be notified by the end of the year if their child qualifies for this program • Athletics– only for 7th and 8th graders

  8. Grade Notification • Expect a quiz (minor grade) weekly and a test (major grade) twice per grading period in every subject • Progress reports are given out at the 3 week mark during each 6 weeks period • Report cards are given out each six weeks • The first and last report cards for the year are mailed home • Home Access Center (HAC) for the most up to date grades and attendance record

  9. Dismissal • No Rainy Day Dismissal Plan • Parents do not need to notify the school of transportation changes • Parents and students need to talk about how they will get home • No afterschool care • Students need to leave the building after school unless they are staying for a supervised activity

  10. CBE • Credit By Exam can be used for math acceleration • Students must score an 80% or higher on the exam to receive credit for the course • Students who decide to take the CBE for 6th grade math will be on track to take Algebra I in 7th grade and Geometry in 8th grade • Algebra I and Geometry are both high school credit courses which are typically taken in 9th and 10th grade More information can be found at tinyurl.com/cbeinfo

  11. Possible Required Courses These courses take the place of your elective class. • Math Lab – designed to refine math concepts and improve STAAR skills • Read 180– designed to improve reading proficiency and help with STAAR skills • Placement may be mandatory as a result of KISD standards and graduation requirements • STAAR results are used to determine placement in the above courses

  12. Course Selection Sheet • Due to your 5th grade Homeroom Teacher • Must be signed by a parent/guardian and the student • If you are moving or planning to move, you still must turn in a course selection sheet • Students/teachers will enter their course selections into the computer

  13. Verification Process • All students will receive a verification sheet in March • The verification sheet is not a schedule — it is the list of courses you selected • No changes will be made to courses prior to verification sheets being distributed • Any changes to the student’s courses should be made on the verification sheet and returned to the homeroom teacher with a parent signature • If we do not receive a verification sheet back, we assume no corrections need to be made to your course selections

  14. PTA • 6th parents have the opportunity to be involved in many aspects of junior high life. • BDJH PTA : http://www.bdjhpta.org/ • Parent Groups: BDJH has different parent groups that help out specific electives, clubs, and/or activities
