BDC main functions • Data collation (e.g. data flows related to Nature Directives, EEA priority data flows) • Data standardisation (e.g. harmonized datasets for cross border comparison, reference for species/habitats in European legislation, EUNIS habitats classification) • Data analysis (generation of statistics and indicators, e.g. SEBI) • Publication (e.g. easy and interactive access to biodiversity data, maps, graphs, tables) With the support of ETC/BD and in cooperation with DG Env

BDC main focus • Contains data and information on species, habitats and protected sites in Europe • Species of the Nature Directives + Red listed species + EUNIS • Habitat types of the Nature Directives + EUNIS • Sites of the Nature Directives (Natura 2000) + Nationally designated areas (CDDA) + EUNIS

  8. BDC data flows • EU reporting – Birds and Habitats Directives (Natura 2000 sites, Article 17 - conservation status) • EEA priority data flow – Nationally Designated Areas (CDDA) - Pan European level, feeds into WCMC world database of protected areas

  9. Plans and challenges • New data needs (e.g. invasives, pollinators, crop wild relatives, adaptation to climate change) • Improve interoperability between EDCs • Improve handling of statistics • Global information sharing (e.g. GBIF) • Integrate outcomes from EU research projects (e.g. LifeWatch, EBONE) • Mobilising NGO data and citizen observations
