Defining Characteristics • Soft bodied animals, mostly protected by hard shell • 3 main body parts -A muscular foot (used for movement) -Visceral mass (stores internal organs) -Mantle (tissue that makes shell if there is one present) • Reduced coelom • Main body cavity is a hemocoel, which means their blood flows through their coelom, without veins or arteries • True digestive system • Protostome • Hydrostatic Skeleton

Classes • Mollusks are one of the most diverse phylum of animals • 4 major classes: -Chitons: Marine animals with an 8 plate shell -Snails and Slugs: Marine, freshwater, or terrestrial animals with asymetric bodies -Clams, Mussles, Scallops, and Oysters: Marine or freshwater with a flat shell and gills -Squids, Octopi, and Nautiluses: Marine with tentacles, that move by jet propulsion
