  1. Unit 4Goal 6.07 To compare responsibilities, jurisdictions and methods of law enforcement agencies. I: Municipal Law Enforcement A: Police Dept Law enforcement within the city or town limits Arrests law breakers Provide security for public events and places

II: County Law Enforcement A: Sheriff • Elected in NC • 1 Sheriff in each county;100 total • Each sheriff department hires deputies to: • Enforce laws in unincorporated areas of the county (outside city limits. • Arrest lawbreakers • Carry out county court decisions; delivers summons, and subpoenas • Oversees county animal control

  3. C: District Attorney: • Prosecutes law breakers • Elected to office and hires attorneys to serve as prosecutors in court.

D: State Law Enforcement • A: Attorney General: elected official who is part of the NC Council of State. • Oversees SBI (State Bureau of Investigation) • Prosecutes state-wide crimes and govt. corruption w/in the state. B: State Bureau of Investigation: Investigates drug trafficking, extortion, political corruption, racketeering. C: Highway Patrol: Monitors highways and interstates, manages the DMV, works for the governor and political events. D: State Park Rangers, wildlife and alcoholic beverages control (ABC officials) All 2 agencies have State wide jurisdiction to enforce laws.

E: Federal Law Enforcement • A: Federal Bureau of Investigation • Independent executive agency • Director appointed by President, confirmed by Senate • Investigates federal crimes. • State Bureau of Investigation (at the state level) B: Border Patrol: Manages the border looking for drug smugglers, and illegal aliens. C: US Secret Service-Protects president and other high up officials, investigates counterfeiting ( fake money) D: US Attorney General • Head of Department of Justice • Top US Law enforcement official • Appointed by President, Confirmed by Senate

  6. E: US Attorneys • One for each judicial district • Prosecute people accused of breaking federal laws • Appointed by president for four year terms F: Federal Marshals Make arrests, transport prisoners, collect fines, protect jurors and courts, serve subpoenas. Protect witnesses
