A Quick Guide To The AMA Referencing Style Construed by the American Medical Association, many reputed institutions such as The Stanford University, University of California Berkeley, etc. use this style extensively. Most students, however, use automated AMA citation machine to cite their papers and remain unaware of the rules & techniques within. Learning the specific nuances of the AMA style can be a big help to check the correctness of automated citations and in many other circumstances. This article lays down some fundamental rules and regulations everyone should remember while citing in the AMA style. AMA in-text citations The AMA citation style is complicated than other commonly used referencing styles. These complications are one of the main reasons why many look for automatic free AMA citation generators while referencing documents. Though most AMA citation makers online offer free citation help, it’s best to double-check the citations they provide. Here are some vital points to remember while checking or writing in-text citations using the AMA referencing styles.  All citations in the AMA style should be marked in numerical order, and a consecutive manner, with Arabic numerals, added as superscripts.  Add the superscript numerals outside periods & commas and inside colons & semicolons  Add commas to separate each citation number but use a hyphen if you are citing consecutive citation numbers.  While referencing authors in the text, use their surnames only. In the case of multiple authors, mention the surname of the first author followed by “et al.”. Following is an example of an in-text citation from a trusted, free AMA citation generator: “Lunney et al2stated that the national expenditures for medical care in the months and days preceding death are enormous. “

  2. The superscript given above cites a source that lies in the second position in the reference list. Rules for developing the reference list  In the AMA citation format, the entries in a reference list are added in a numbered form. Following the regular convention, place the reference lists on a separate page at the end of the document. Number all the entries consecutively in the order of their in-text citations.  Use the author’s surname, followed by their initials without periods. If there are less than six authors, you need to mention all of them. If there are less than six, list the surnames of the first three and follow it up with an ‘et al.’. Here’s a brief overview of how to write a reference list using the AMA style. 1. Books (Print) Book author(s) or editor(s). Book title. Volume number and title. Edition number.
