  1. David Salle • Post-Modern painter • Post-Modernism is a term that is used in not only art but in literature, music, communications, philosophy, and many other areas of study. • Because of this it has a variety of meanings. • Post-Modernism began in the mid 1980’s.

  2. Post-Modernism • Main Entry: post·mod·ernPronunciation: "pOs(t)-'mä-d&rn, ÷-'mä-d(&-)r&nFunction: adjective: of, relating to, or being any of several movements (as in art, architecture, or literature) that are reactions against the philosophy and practices of modern movements and are typically marked by revival of traditional elements and techniques • In relationship to art, post-modernism refers to a blend of styles from the past to create one work of art. • Many post-modernists felt that originality was dead, and that the only way to create something new and “original” was to revive and blend older styles together.

  3. David Salle • Salle attempted to show meaning through blending classical, high art styles with the more contemporary “low art” styles. These blends would often be combinations of classical figurative and modern graphics. • Most of Salle’s influence, being a forerunner of postmodernism, is in Pop art. • The use of appropriation dominates his work.
