Spanish-American War The conflict between Cuba and Spain which erupted in 1897 was exaggerated in the American press/media by as competing newspapers used yellow journalism to sensationalize the conflict and sell newspapers. On April 25, 1898 the United States declared war on Spain following the sinking of the Battleship Maine in Havana harbor on February 15, 1898. The war ended with the signing of the Treaty of Paris on December 10, 1898. As a result Spain lost its control over the remains of its overseas empire -- Cuba, Puerto Rico, the Philippines Islands, Guam, to the United States. SUMMARIZE & ADD TO YOUR INTERACTIVE NOTEBOOK

Roosevelt’s BIG Stick Diplomacy • Big Stick ideology, Big Stick diplomacy, or Big Stick policy refers to U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt’s foreign policy: "speak softly, and carry a big stick.” • The idea of negotiating peacefully (speak softly), simultaneously threatening with a military (big stick). • Roosevelt used this type of diplomacy to protect the interests (resources) in Latin America. Teller Amendment • In April 1898 Senator Henry M. Teller proposed an amendment to the U.S. declaration of war against Spain which proclaimed that the United States would not establish permanent control over Cuba. • The Senate passed the amendment on April 19, 1898 and after Spanish troops left the island in 1898, the United States occupied Cuba until 1902. Pershing was a U.S. military general during the Mexican Revolution that affected U.S. interests in Mexico. • Woodrow Wilson was the president general during the Mexican Revolution that affected U.S. interests in Mexico. • These two are linked because President Wilson assigned John J. Pershing to go into Mexico to catch the infamous Francisco “Pancho” Villa who had killed 17 Americans in New Mexico… the mission FAILED!
