About WIL • Non-profit community organization that has been providing employment support services and career development solutions since 1984 • Programs and services designed to provide job seekers with the skills/confidence they need to succeed • WIL helps clients identify career goals, provides programs designed to achieve employment, and offers educational upgrading tools to develop employment options • No cost if you are currently unemployed or under-employed

  4. Overview of Programs & Services Programs and services we will be discussing today: • Employment Counselling • Grade 12 Equivalency (GED Program) • Career Planning Tools / Career Assessments • Employment Preparation Workshops

  5. Employment Counselling • Alone or combined with any of our programs and services, employment counselling provides you with valuable support in the employment planning and development process • A personal, client-centred approach to discuss concerns, explore employment options and establish achievable employment goals • Trained and experienced counsellors work with clients to make informed choices about future employment

  6. An Employment Counsellor will: • Meet with you to discuss your employment needs • Work with you to develop a clear Employment Action Plan • Discuss your employment and training options • Aid you with document evaluation and translation • Provide ongoing support, guidance, information and referrals to relevant community supports and training • Work through and resolve any work-related issues • Assist you with Second Career, Self Employment Benefit, and Libro Loan applications

Grade 12 Equivalency (GED Program) • The General Educational Development (GED) testing program allows adults who have not finished high school in Canada or outside of Canada to show that they have acquired the knowledge and skills associated with, and comparable to, high school completion. • WIL offers a GED Assessment and Preparation program for individuals interested in obtaining their high school equivalency

Career Planning Tools/Career Assessments • A career assessment is a process to explore/determine your natural abilities, transferable skills, work interests and preferred work environments. • WIL offers several career planning tools/ career assessments to help confirm career choices or open doors to new opportunities • Career Planning tools can help you: • Make informed career/training choices • Identify careers that may be a good fit for you • Move your career in an exciting new direction that you might not have previously considered

  9. Employment Preparation Workshops WIL offers 2 workshop series for immigrant job seekers 1. ESL Essential Job Search Skills for immigrant job seekers seeking non-professional employment • Employment Preparation for Internationally Trained Individuals (ITIs) for immigrant job seekers seeking professional employment

  10. Essential Job Search Skills Workshop ESL Benchmark Level 4/5 and above Recommended for job search in non-professional occupations (eg. Service Industry, Customer Service, Manufacturing positions, etc.) 6 days Full Time (Monday to Friday) 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

ESL Essential Job Search Skills Workshop Topics Covered: • Effective Job Search Strategies • Cover Letters & Resumes • References • Application Forms • Interview Preparation • Connect to a WIL Sales & Marketing Advisor* If you are an immigrant whose first language is English, you also have the option of participating in a similar 5 day Full Time Workshop for non-immigrant job seekers

Employment Preparation for Internationally Trained Individuals (ITIs) ESL Benchmark Level 7 and above Recommended for job search in professional occupations for those individuals who have international education/experience (eg. Health Professions, Engineering, Finance, Science, etc.) 16.5 days Full Time 9:15 a.m to 3:30 p.m. (Monday to Thursday) 10:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. (Friday)

Employment Preparation for ITIs Workshop Topics: • Effective Job Search Strategies • Cover Letters and Resumes • Interview Skills • Workplace Success • Canadian Business Culture • Employment Standards in Ontario • Connecting with Employers* • Take one workshop or take them all • Must complete all workshops to qualify for job search support from WIL’s Sales & Marketing team

Connecting with Employers • Connect with a WIL Sales & Marketing Advisor after successful completion of Employment Preparation workshops • Eligible to participate in an 8 week volunteer work placement to gain valuable Canadian work experience • Ongoing job leads and job search support • Ongoing networking opportunities with local employers • Eligible to participate in local Mentorship program • Posting on Skills International – province-wide database

Mentorship for Newcomer Success Program • Matches ITIs with local mentors in their field • Expand your networking opportunities to access the hidden job market and learn more about your profession in Canada • Match is for 24 hours of time with a local mentor over a period of 6 months • Must have completed all workshops (or be referred by one of our community partners) to be eligible to participate www.mentorship.wil.ca

Skills International • Only online searchable database of its kind • Dedicated exclusively to profiling the skills of immigrant job seekers • Connects pre-screened ITIs with registered employers seeking their skills from across Ontario • Very successful tool to assist you in marketing your skills www.skillsinternational.ca

  18. Employment Resource Centre • The Skill Centre Employment Resource Centre (2nd floor) • Computer Labs, Internet Access & Microsoft Office Software • Access to telephones, fax and photocopy equipment to support job search • Labour Market Information, Job Board & Reference materials

  19. Access Centre for Regulated Employment • Approximately 35 regulated professions in Ontario • Provides information and application submission assistance to ITIs seeking licensure in Ontario’s regulated professions • Assistance in having educational credentials assessed www.accesscentre.ca

  20. Clothingworks • Provides you with up to three free job appropriate outfits to keep. • A referral is required to get an appointment. Speak with your employment counsellor to get a referral. www.clothingworks.ca
