  3. Bonfire Night / Guy Fawkes Day • When? • Where? • How? • Why? 5th November UK People light big bonfires in gardens, watch firework displays, burn a model of a man Guy Fawkes (Catholic) wanted to blow up protestant King James I, he was caught and executed (1605)

  4. Hogmanay (Scottish new Year‘s Eve) • When? • Where? • How? 31st December Scotland - Edinburgh People have together large meal then gather in the streets,firework display First footing – visiting neighbours after midnight, first person should be a dark man (good luck)

  5. Halloween • When? • Where? • How? 31 October USA and other countries Costumes, children go from door to door (Trick or treat), carve pumpkins (Jack-o-lantern) with candle inside

  6. Thanksgiving • When? • Where? • How? • Why? 4th Thursday in November USA Families come together, eat turkey with stuffing, watch American football matches on TV, dress parade in NY, charity work People thank for having plenty of food. Native Americans helped Pilgrims(1620) to grow plant and build houses. Thanks for the first harvest.

  7. Independence Day 4th July • When? • Where? • How? • Why USA Local parades, picnics, fireworks display at night Celebration of independence from British in 1776

  8. St. Patrick‘s Day 17th March • When? • Where? • How? • Why? USA and other countries People wear shamrocks and green clothes (the colour of Ireland), they dry (colour) also beer,.. Parades in cities with large Irish communities Many Irish people came to the USA in 19th century after the Potato Famine.
