  4. Collection Development-- 2003 Snapshot -- • 2002-03 materials budget: $288,411 • 2003-04 materials budget: $265,000 • Number of books and nonprint items purchased in 2003: 5,299 • Staff: • One Collection Development Coordinator • Four full time support staff for Acquisitions

  5. Interlibrary Loan at CCL • Used to supplement local collection • Available to MSU faculty, staff, and students • A function of Public Services

  6. Interlibrary Loan at CCL-- 2003 Snapshot -- • Borrowing Requests: 2,217 filled • Lending Requests: 3,994 filled • Staff: • One librarian w/split responsibilities • One fulltime ILL Assistant (lending) • One other ILL person w/split responsibilities (borrowing)

  7. The Idea – November 2002 • University of Nevada, Reno’s presentation at ALA in 2002 • Email to ALA listserv • Acquisitions librarian at MSU suggested trying it • Library Director -- “Go for it!”

Initial Concerns with Purchasing ILL Requests • No Librarian review? • No Faculty review? • Which budget line would cover these purchases? • Isn’t there a lot of potential for abuse? • What about the workflow/workload of Technical and Public Services? • Patrons doing selection?! • Will the collection suffer?

  9. Literature Review & Answers to Initial Concerns Brilliant! • This has been done before (and with success?!) • Recognized the need to develop Selection Guidelines for staff • Scheduled trial run for January-June 2003 • Collection Development Committee to review results at end of fiscal year

  10. Collaboration: Public & Technical Services • Called a meeting of staff from: • Acquisitions • ILL • Hashed out the details of the Selection Guidelines document • Reached consensus

  11. Developing Selection Criteria The criteria should… • Try to anticipate potential problems • Be flexible • Delineate specific workflows • Assign responsibility to someone at each stage of the process • Be clear and easy to follow

  12. The Criteria The requested items must be… • books • published in the last 5 years • in English • not LOST or MISSING titles • not already owned by MSU • available for RUSH order • appropriate for the collection • under $100

  14. Implementation & Adjustments Who’s placing the “item holds”?! • Began in January 2003 • Minor changes to workflow as we progressed • Minor changes to Selection Guidelines too No more textbooks!

  15. The Books • Number of ILL book requests purchased for the Library’s Collection: 175 • Number of ILL book requests filled through traditional ILL: 888

  16. Turnaround Time • Average turnaround time for traditional ILL books: 12.7 days • Average turnaround time for purchased ILL books: 10.9 days

  17. Buying the Books • 14 different vendors • Amazon accounted for 87% of ILL puchases • Average cost of ILL book: $34.24

  18. “But will others use the books?” • Average circulation of ILL books bought for the collection in 2003 (minus first check-out): 1.06 times • Average circulation of other books purchased during 2003: .79 times
