  2. Aims of the session To help you develop and sharpen your academic writing skills. To help you identify the important characteristics of postgraduate academic writing skills.

  3. Why are academic writing skills necessary for postgraduate study? Postgraduate studies entails you to be a more dynamic and captivated scholar. As a postgraduate student, it is your moral responsibility to contribute to your field of study. Four ways that impact postgraduate writing: • Critical thinking • Research • Academic integrity • Academic style

  4. Critical thinking Critical thinking is the ability to think independently and rationally. Those acquainted with critical thinking skills are able to understand the logic and relationship between the ideas. When writing as a critical thinker the student would: • List down his/her original viewpoint on previous research. • Establish a clear connection between ideas-your-work– supplementary research. • Information given must be well organized and to the point. • Explain the examples/quotes wherever necessary. • Remember citing down appropriate sources.

  5. Research Academic research is conducted under a conditioned environment, such as a university. Research conducted is presented in a specific format as listed in a style guide. For example: A psychology research paper would abide the American Psychological Association style guide. • Be updated and informed about your field of study. • Penetrate into the depth of your research topic. • Review research papers associated with your research study. • Write down your ideas and present information in a new manner using relevant existing research works.

  6. Academic integrity Academic integrity is the ethical policy for academic writing. Academia moral codes ensure honesty is maintained, academic standards are followed, and plagiarism is not practiced. When writing the student must: • Give due credit for referencing, intellectual material borrowed, paraphrasing, and quotes. • Be cautioned when reproducing intellectual work. Precede refurbishing activity only when you have secured the rights to that intellectual property.

  7. Academic writing style • Writing must be objective and clear. • Use a formal approach. • Ideas should be crisp and presented sequentially. • Analyze without being biased. • English language , Grammar , Punctuation, and Format must be precise as required by your university/journal/publisher. • Avoid any controversial language.
