The Black Locust (Robinia pseudoacacia) is a medium-sized tree that can grow up to 80 feet tall. It thrives in sandy or rocky soil and is typically found in fields and open areas. Its leaves are pinnately compound, measuring 6 to 12 inches long, with 7 to 19 paired leaflets per stem. The bark is rough, light gray, and deeply furrowed. This tree serves as a vital food source for white-tailed deer and wild turkey, while providing shelter for species like the black rat snake and eastern gray squirrel. Additionally, its wood is commonly used for fencing.
