  2. Vocabulary • Exponential Form- Example: Writing 2 X 2 X 2 as 2³ • Base- The repeated factor; in this case, 2 • Exponent/Power- How many times the base is used; in this case, 3 • Squared- Using 2 as an exponent • Cubed- Using 3 as an exponent

  3. Expanded FormUsing Exponents • Multiplying a number by a power of 10 • Any nonzero number raised to the zero power = 1 • Example: 78,045 • Expanded Form: (7 x 10,000) + (8 x 1,000) + (4 x 10) + 5 • Expanded Form Using Exponents: (7 x 10^4) + (8 x 10^3) + ( 4 x 10^1) + (5 x 10^0)

  4. Practice • What are two ways to read 6^3? • Write 15 x 15 x 15 x 15 x 15 in exponential form. • Write 35,402 in expanded form using exponents.

  6. Steps • 1. Write the numbers; line up places; begin at the left • 2. Find the first place where the digits are different and compare.

  9. Steps • 1. Find the rounding place (given) • 2. Look at the digit to the right • 3. If the number is 5 or greater, add one to the rounding digit. • 4. If the number is less than 5, leave it alone.

  10. Practice • Round to the underlined place • 3,101,922 • Answer: 3,101,900 • 45,699,825 • Answer: 45,700,000
