After school: -Study Hall on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 2:30-3:30pm in library. -Teacher Office Hours (check website!) -Late bus at 4:15pm, only for students participating in activities -Jefferson Rec Center program, open until 6pm daily -Sports Choice on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 2:30-3:30pm

Why reading in 6th grade? - Shift from “learning to read” to “reading to learn” - Vocabulary growth (most students will gain 4000 words in middle school!) - Importance of independent reading - Explicit strategy instruction across content areas
5 Units of Study 1 - General introduction to strategies 2 - English and memoirs 3 - Math and ‘real world’ application 4 - Social Studies and our community 5 -Science and global water issues
All reading units are designed to compliment writing units in English - Mentor texts -Research practice -Exposure to variety of writing styles -Exposure to various viewpoints on the same topic
Balance between strategies and skills Strategies: Skills: -Set a purpose -Recognizing Organizational Patterns -Make connections -Compare and Contrast -Comment and Question -Cause and Effect -Visualize -Making Inferences -Determine Importance -Drawing Conclusions -Summarize -Making Predictions
Workshop format -In order to meet students where they are and encourage appropriate growth -Text sets -Independence and Responsibility -Differentiation (leveled texts, small groups, challenges)
Reading Challenge -40 Book Challenge -Challenge Book each month with lunch discussion -Open to all students
Homework None… but students are expected to read 30 minutes a night for English class. That counts for reading class too!
