  1. Cool Metal Roofing and Energy Star

  2. Why Is Cool Metal Roofing Important?

  3. The U.S. Energy Forecast The US primary energy consumption is expected to grow 1.1% annually Source: Energy Information Administration (EIA)

  4. By The Year 2030 Our nation’s electricity demands will be 45% greater than today Source: Nuclear Energy Institute

  5. Energy Codes • Reduce Energy Consumption • Reduce Utility Expenses • Reduce Environmental Emissions • Improve Thermal Comfort • Extend Natural Resources Since 1989 energy codes have increased stringency by 23%

  6. Conservation and Efficiency “The cheapest, most reliable source of new energy is saved energy.” Peter Turnbull, PG&E

  7. New Residential Rebate Program • Reflective Roof component of FPL’s Residential Building Envelope Program • Presently: rebate of $0.10/ft2 • Min. TSR of 0.65 for metal roofing • Min. TSR of 0.73 for tile roofing • Future: Flat incentive as of November 1, 2006 • $325 to customer purchasing qualified roof, and • $200 to contractor selling qualified roof • Spring 2007 • Adding $0.50/ft2 incentive for residential condominium roofs • White membranes or white coatings with min TSR of 0.73 Note: Only roofing materials listed on Energy Star website or CRRC directory are eligible for FPL rebates

  8. LEED-NC Version 2.2 Sustainable Sites Credit 7.2 Heat Island Effect: Roofing (1 Point) “Use roofing materials having a Solar Reflectance Index (SRI) equal to or greater than the values in the table below for a minimum of 75% of the roof surface.”

  9. What Qualifies ? Low Slope (min SRI = 78) Steep Slope (min SRI = 29) NOTE: Unpainted passivated Galvalume® sheet 1 and acrylic-coated Galvalume® sheet 2 do not meet the min SRI values 1 based on TSR of 0.78, and emittance of 0.08 2 based on TSR of 0.68, and emittance of 0.08

  10. Americans spend about $40 billion annually to air condition buildings – one-sixth of all electricity generated in this country.

  11. What is Energy Star ??? ENERGY STAR is a joint program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy helping us all save money and protect the environment through energy efficient products and practices.

  12. Qualifying Requirements – Low Slope • Low Slope: Surface with a slope of 2:12 or less • Initial Solar Reflectance of: • Greater or Equal to 65% • Maintenance of SR: (three year reading) • greater than or equal to 50% (-15% SR over 3 years) under normal conditions. • Thermal Emittance: • Greater than or equal to 75%. • SRI Alternative: to be used if the roof product cannot achieve thermal emittance value: • Initial SRI equal to or greater to 75 • Maintenance of SRI: equal to greater to 53

  13. Qualifying Requirements – Steep Slope • Steep Slope:Surface with a slope of 2:12 or greater • Initial Solar Reflectance of: • Greater or Equal to 25% • Maintenance of SR: (three year reading) • greater than or equal to 15% (-10% SR over 3 years) under normal conditions. • Thermal Emittance: • Greater than or equal to 75%. • SRI Alternative: to be used if the roof product cannot achieve thermal emittance value: • Initial SRI equal to or greater to 18 • Maintenance of SRI: equal to greater to 4

  16. Tax Incentives

  17. Energy Policy Act of 2005Tax Credits and Deductions • Residential • Tax credits up to $500 for home improvements (homeowners) • Tax credits up to $2000 for new home energy efficiency (contractors) • Commercial • Tax deductions up to $1.80/ft2 for energy efficient building (building owners) • For taxable years 2006 and 2007

  18. Tax credits – Existing Homes • All ENERGY STAR® labeled metal roofs qualify for the $500 tax credit • Must be expected to last 5 years OR have a 2 year warranty • Installation costs are not included • Manufacturer’s Certification Statement is required • For tax purposes, save your receipt and the Manufacturer's Certification Statement • The IRS encourages manufacturers to provide these Certifications on their website to facilitate identification of qualified products • Homeowner does not have to submit a copy with tax returns

  19. Tax Credits are More Valuable Than Tax Deductions • Tax credits reduce amount of tax owed dollar for dollar • Tax deduction merely reduces amount of income subject to tax Example: $500 tax credit saves a person $500 in taxes $500 tax deduction saves a person $140 in taxes $2000 tax credit saves a person $2000 in taxes $2000 tax deduction saves a person $560 in taxes

  20. Possible Extension To EP Act of 2005 Bill introduced to Senate in June 2006 by Sen. Olympia Snowe (R) ME and Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D) CA “EXTEND the Energy Efficiency Incentives Act of 2006” S.3628

  21. Provisions • Extend tax credits/deductions through 2010 • Incentives based on performance rather than cost • Sliding scale for home improvements • Tax credits from $800 (20% savings) to $2000 (50% savings) • Increases commercial tax deductions from $1.80 to $2.25 / ft2 for energy efficiency • Includes “asphalt roof with cooling granules” in addition to cool metal roofing

  22. Key Definitions • TSR / Total Solar Reflectance: amount of radiant energy reflected by a roofing material. Range is from 0 (total absorption and/or transmission) to 1.0 (total reflection). • Thermal Emittance: the ability of a material to release heat that it has absorbed. Range is from 0 to 1.0. The higher the emittance the better • Production Line Color: “Standard color offerings by the manufacturer and are promoted in general product information and in marketing materials” • Custom Color: A Custom Color is not individually promoted in general product information and marketing materials. • Color Families:18 specific color space ranges designed by the CMRC to allow Licensed Sellers with large color portfolios to register groups of colors at a reduced cost with the CRRC. ( Hunter L a b / Default SRV ) • AITL: Accredited Independent Test Laboratory. Independent lab accredited by the CRRC to evaluate radiative properties of roofing materials • AMTL: Accredited Manufacturing Test Laboratory. Lab affiliated with a Licensed Seller or OM accredited by the CRRC to evaluate radiative properties of roofing materials
