    1. ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT SYSTEM GENERAL AWARENESS TRAINING

    2. WELCOME TO THE 2009 GENERAL AWARENESS TRAINING (GAT) Missouri University of Science and Technology (Missouri S&T) has established an annual training program, designed to bring awareness to all Missouri S&T employees of the importance of our Sustainability Policy and the requirements of our Environmental Management System (EMS). As employees of Missouri S&T, we each play a key role in the success of our EMS program. We encourage faculty, staff and students to be aware of our environmental issues as they relate to the campus. To comply with our EMS requirements, all employees must review and complete the following training program by May 29, 2009. Upon completion, an electronic record of your participation will be sent to the Environmental Health & Safety Office (EHS). Please contact the EHS Department (ext. 4305) if you do not have access to a computer to take the training. Arrangements will be made so all employees are able to review the General Awareness Training and complete the test by the designated timeline.

    3. TRAINING OBJECTIVES The significant environmental impacts of daily campus work activities and the environmental benefits of improved personal performance; The roles and responsibilities of all Missouri S&T employees and students in achieving conformance with the Sustainability Policy and procedures and with the requirements of the EMS. The potential consequences of not following specified operating procedures; and, The goals and objectives of the EMS and specific plans the campus has in place for meeting those objectives.

    4. FACULTY, STAFF AND STUDENTS Annual review of the EMS is essential in informing the campus community of its environmental performance. All campus employees have environmental responsibilities. Each employee should be familiar with the Sustainability Policy and their role in upholding policy commitments. Pay extra attention to information with the flashing question mark.

    5. EMERGENCY RESPONSE Fire Explosion Radioactivity Emergency Medical Emergency

    6. SUSTAINABILITY POLICY Policy: Missouri S&T will follow the guidelines of the American College & University Presidents Climate Commitment (ACUPCC) to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases. Missouri S&T will raise awareness among faculty, staff and students on the importance of proactive environmental management and stewardship. Missouri S&T will implement measures to conserve resources, including energy, water and paper. Missouri S&T will provide recycling and waste minimization opportunities, awareness, and education for campus and surrounding communities. Missouri S&T will establish continual improvement processes to prevent pollution and ensure compliance with regulatory and other requirements.

    8. WHAT IS AN ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT SYSTEM? A tool to help organizations prevent pollution, operate more efficiently and improve their environmental performance. Plans that help manage environmental impacts, raise environmental awareness with employees and set objectives and targets to help reduce negative environmental impacts while lowering operational costs. It provides for continual improvement as we search for sustainable processes and procedures that ensure the program moves forward. It is a campus wide program. Missouri S&Ts EMS is certified under ISO 14001.

    9. GREEN CAMPUS INITIATIVE AND EMS Missouri S&Ts Environmental Management System (EMS) is now part of the Green Campus Initiative. The Environmental Policy has been replaced with the Sustainability Policy. The Green Campus Committee is comprised of several sub-committees; EMS is one of the sub-committees.

    10. EMS GREEN CAMPUS COMMITTEE The Green Campus Committee is comprised of faculty, staff and students from different departments across the campus. This committee meets on a monthly basis and is authorized to:

    11. OBJECTIVES & TARGETS SUMMARY The designated objectives and targets created by the Green Campus Committee takes into account the legal requirements and environmental aspects of the Missouri S&T Campus. These objectives & targets have to be measurable. The areas selected for 2009 are:

    12. AWARENESS OF ASPECTS AND IMPACTS Missouri S&T is required to perform a campus wide survey every three years to identify aspects & impacts. Missouri S&T also submits a yearly questionnaire to departments seeking information on new aspects that have occurred over the year.

    13. GUIDELINES FOR ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

    14. SIGNIFICANT ENVIRONMENTAL ASPECTS Material usage Vehicle transportation Fuel consumption Water consumption Energy consumption Solid Waste generation

    15. ADDITONAL INFORMATION ABOUT MISSOURI S&Ts EMS PROGRAM

    16. EMS COMMUNICATION The Green Campus Committee actively seeks input on EMS and other sustainability issues from faculty, staff and students. Information about the EMS is communicated to the campus through the Missouri Miner, e-connection, campus web pages, local newspapers, radio and special events.

    17. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH & SAFETY INFORMATION

    18. GUIDELINES FOR THE ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT SYSTEM The EMS program operates under the guidelines of the; ISO 14001:2004 Standard Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) Hazardous chemicals, waste and materials Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPP) Construction, land disturbance Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasure Rule (SPCC) Plans developed to contain liquid spills Nuclear Regulatory Commission License (NRC) Control of radioactive material and waste

    19. MISSOURI S&T RECYCLING PROGRAM

    20. CHEMICAL WASTE There are over 33,000 different chemical containers on the Missouri S&T campus. Chemical waste is typically generated on the campus each day. Once a pick up request form has been completed, the chemical waste is retrieved by EHS personnel and stored in a special facility. A pick-up request form can be obtained by clicking here - http://ehs.mst.edu/forms/hazardouswaste/index.html The chemical waste is then transported off campus by a licensed hazardous waste contractor. Lab safety training sessions are provided at the beginning of each semester for those individuals who work with chemicals.

    21. PREPARING FOR THE FUTURE To meet societys ever increasing industrial growth, an EMS is a method of demonstrating progress. Missouri S&T is making progress in the following areas. Waste reduction- Reducing Missouri S&Ts solid waste stream Natural resource protection Installing a wind turbine & solar array at Missouri Highway Patrol Troop I Headquarters Energy efficiency- Monitoring electrical usage at McNutt Hall Reuse & recycle Involving students in plastic bottle and overall recycling Received a grant from the local Solid Waste District to improve recycling in campus buildings Alternative fuel sources- Hydrogen fueling station

    22. CONCLUSION If you experience technical problems completing the assessment in blackboard, please contact Wade Jadwin in the Environmental Health & Safety office at extension 4305. After completing the quiz, a record of your participation will be filed. If you have general questions regarding the EMS, please contact the Office of Environmental Health & Safety at extension 4305.
