  1. Practical-1: Study of Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM) system:Subject: Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM) A Presentation by Prof. Dr. Janak B. Valaki Associate Professor, Mechanical Engg. Dept., Government Engineering College, Bhavnagar janakvalaki@gmail.com, 099137 15250

  2. Learning Outcomes

  3. Meaning of CAD • Use of computer systems to assist in the creation, modification, analysis, and optimization of a design. • A process of use of computers in creating, analysing, modifying, optimizing and drafting/documenting a product data so as to achieve its design goal efficiently and effectively.

  4. Meaning of CAM

  5. “A Process of use of computers in planning, manufacturing, inspecting and controlling the manufacturing operation directly orindirectly”

  6. Meaning of CIM • CIM is defined as "A Process of integration of CAD, CAM and business aspects of a factory and it attempts to describe complete automation with all processes functioning under computercontrol.“ • CIM includes Management information Systems (MIS) sales, marketing, finance, database management system, design, manufacturing, monitoring & control and bar code software, which helps to manage and control the overall factory environment.

  9. Manufacturing Activities

  10. Automation • Automation: the use or introduction of automatic equipment in a manufacturing or other process or facility. • When an activity, machine or entire system perform its tasks or operations automatically without human involvement, it is known as Automation. • It can be semi automation or full automation. • Semi Automation- Only few activities are performed automatically • Full Automation – All the activities are performed automatically

  11. Means of Automation • Hardwired Based Automation – a) Mechanical Type: using Joints, Linkages, Cam & Follower systems, Examples- Capstan Turret lathe, Automats, Transfer lines etc. b) Electrical Type: Electrical wire circuitry and electrical motors based actuators, Example- NC machines

  12. Means of Automation 2) Soft wired Based Automation a) Electronics circuit based : Low level intelligence- PLC, SCADA, Micro Controller based mini computers Examples- CNC, DNC, b) Micro Electronics and Software based: High level Intelligence- Examples- Robots, AGVs, FMS, Smart Machines, Self Diagnostic machines

  13. Types of Automation in manufacturingsystem FixedAutomation ProgrammableAutomation FlexibleAutomation

  14. FixedAutomation Fixed Automation: is a system in which sequence of processing operation is fixed by the equipment configuration Ex.- Machining Transfer lines, Automated Assembly machines

  15. ProgrammableAutomation • In Programmable Automation systems, the production equipments is designed with the capability to change the sequence of operation to accommodate different product configuration. • Ex.- Numerical controlled machinetool • Industrialrobots • Programmable logiccontrollers

  16. FlexibleAutomation • Flexible automation is capable of producing a variety of parts with virtually no time lost for changeover from one part style to thenext. • Ex. FMS, Smart factory

  17. Chronological Events For Major Technological Development of Machine Tools

  18. Need for CAD/CAM • Design and manufacturing forms the core of engineering. • To remain competitive in global economy • New products with enhanced features at competitive costs • Short lead times and short product lives • Reduction in product life cycle • Mass customization – Customer specific changes to satisfy diverse requirements – High flexibility in the manufacturing system • Reduction in manufacturing cost and delivery time • Increasing consumer awareness about quality

  19. Role Of Management In CIM 1.Develop a business model for a factory to understand the problems. 2. Develop a functional model for the processes, functions and activities. 3. Develop an information model for system interfaces, database, information exchange, etc. 4. Develop a network model for communication and networking. 5. Develop an organizational model for integrating the various islands of automation on the existing organization structure, culture and to safeguard against detrimental effects. 6. Develop the implementation plan which takes into account special features of the business and operations.

  20. Impact of CIM Implementation 1. Downsizing of Workforce 2. Requirement of Change in Skill Sets 3. Specialists Need to Generalize and Generalists Need to Specialize 4. Culture change in management
