Connecticut Elizabeth Buttner elizabeth.buttner@ct.gov
Connecticut • MSP Instructional Coaching Initiative • 3-year academies prepare K-8 teachers for new roles as science coaches and new “teacher-leader” state endorsement; • Graduate courses, summer inquiry institutes (Exploratorium model), monthly seminars and Cognitive Coaching training; • Cross-site student work research study - students in coached classes perform significantly higher in scientific inquiry compared with those in uncoached classes. • State-developed curriculum-embedded science performance tasks aim to change teaching practices: • Open-ended, multi-day investigations focus on Framework content and inquiry skill-building (“assessment as learning” – Linda Darling-Hammond); • Teachers choose when and how to implement; teacher manuals provide inquiry pedagogy notes and differentiation suggestions; • Students learn to pose questions, design experiments, present and work with data, communicate and evaluate outcomes; • Teachers evaluate student work using state-developed formative feedback rubrics; • Some items on state science test refer to task scenarios to assess inquiry (“assessment of learning”).
Connecticut • Connecticut Core Science Curriculum Framework: PK-8 grade-by-grade; Gr. 9 physical science; Gr. 10 biology; advanced course expectations. http://www.sde.ct.gov/sde/cwp/view.asp?a=2618&q=320890 • Connecticut PK-8 Curriculum Standards: Adds grade-level student outcomes to Framework content descriptors. http://www.sde.ct.gov/sde/lib/sde/pdf/curriculum/science/PK8_sciencecurriculumstandards2009.pdf • Connecticut Mastery Test Science Assessment Handbook for Elementary and Middle Grades http://www.sde.ct.gov/sde/lib/sde/pdf/curriculum/science/science_cmt_handbook.pdf

North Carolina • Finalist State for Race to the Top • Accountability and Curriculum Reform Effort– also known as ACRE - is the state's comprehensive initiative to redefine the Standard Course of Study for K-12 students, the student testing program and the school accountability model. In undertaking this ambitious work, North Carolina education leaders are the first in the nation to address learning standards, student tests and school accountability simultaneously.http://www.ncpublicschools.org/acre • North Carolina Environmental Literacy Plan -In the fall of 2008, the N.C. Department of Public Instruction and the N.C. Department of Environment & Natural Resources entered into a partnership to develop a state environmental literacy plan. This partnership was created in response to federal legislation called the No Child Left Inside Act, which would provide increased funding for environmental education initiatives as part of the reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (also known as No Child Left Behind).
