  3. What is knowledge? Scientific Hypothesis testing Based on what we learn from using the scientific method Falsifiable Correspondence theory? Linear Indigenous Specific, place-based understanding of an area Non-falsifiable Coherence theory? Circular

  4. What might be the stories of this area? • How might they relate to ecosystem studies? • Clear vs. stormy days • Correlations between climate and animal numbers/behavior • Leaf out times • Growing season length • Decomposition times • Mismatch between traditional stories and current obs • Disturbances • Fire • Blowdowns • Insect infestations

  5. Problems Uncertainty regarding what is “meaningful” knowledge Info may not be generalizable - how to incorporate into our knowledge systems Cultural misunderstandings Trust issues I don’t know what I’m talking about

  6. Strengths Paradigm Shift? A group that can help us to challenge our deeply ingrained assumptions Gain understandings that would not be accessible to us otherwise Uses of GIS Benefits for both groups Helps to address the meaningfulness of this cluster of research sites
