Development of University Campus Brno: A Hub for Biomedical Research and Innovation

The University Campus in Brno, established before 2000, aims to synergize academia and industry, focusing on medicine and life sciences. The campus is adjacent to the largest teaching hospital in Bohunice and facilitates partnerships with commercial entities. The project, worth €200 million, began with the first EIB loan for education outside EU15. Key milestones include the establishment of CEITEC for life sciences and advanced materials, servicing over 1,000 PhD students and hosting integrated labs, enhancing research and technology transfer in the region.

The Further Plans:Eliminated Risks • Lack of supercritical mass within individual institutions. • Fragmented infrastructure for large Science & Technology projects and lack of professional management. • Unfortunate split between Engineering (Brno University of Technology) and Medicine, Science, and Arts (Masaryk University). • Split between the tertiary education and research in Adacemy of Sciences in general. • Limited experience and tradition in IPR protection and technology transfer.
