GOVERNMENT CAREERS POLICIES • Statutory guidance: the duty to secure independent and impartial careers guidance for young people in schools (DfE, March 2013) • Extend the duty on schools to secure access to independent and impartial careers guidance down to Year 8 and up to age 18, with effect from Sept 2013 • Raising of the Participation Age • Youth Guarantee • Destination Measures NEW – CAREERS ACTION PLAN FOR ENGLAND

PROVIDING HIGH QUALITY CAREERS SUPPORT SERVICES ACROSS LONDON • London Councils – pioneering careers work in London • GLA Economy Committee – tailor-made: improving adult careers services in London • Education Select Committee Report • Ofsted – Going in the Right Direction? • National Careers Council – an Aspirational Nation: creating a culture change in careers provision • Pearson Think Tank – a Cloudy Horizon: careers services in England What really makes a difference? • A strong leadership focus on careers work • A clear ‘line of sight to learning and work’ opportunities

MAKING THIS WORK • High impact delivery and co-working between a range of community institutions • Careers insights – more links to employers / employees • Careers guidance – qualified professionals • Greater involvement of employers • Training and support for leaders, managers and practitioners – ‘careers in the 21st Century’ • Dedicated funding for national and local careers support and employability services

  8. NATIONAL CAREERS SERVICE IN LONDON : IN COMMUNITY • Universal Service: face-to-face • Up to three sessions for priority groups • Extensive labour market information • Web-based service • Telephone advice and guidance

  9. NATIONAL CAREERS SERVICE IN LONDON: IN CUSTODY • Deliver service in all London prisons • Focus on resettlement • Joint work with JCP, Probation, local authorities and the VCS • 14,500 sessions last year
