  2. Florida DOT Strategic Highway Safety Plan Focus Area # 5 Strategy # 3: Implement a comprehensive pedestrian and bicycle traffic safety education component in at least 3 elementary and/or middle schools per year in each district.

  6. Florida Traffic Ed Program’s Goal • Reduce injuries to children from bicycle and pedestrian crashes by training them with the knowledge and skills needed to be competent and safe in traffic.

  7. Curriculum Programs • Elementary Teacher Training • Middle School Training • Bike’N Ped Driver Ed • Community Workshops

  8. Elementary Bicycle Safety Training • Focuses on development of on-bike and pedestrian skills, students in K-5, appropriate for physical education classes • 10-hour Teacher Workshop is taught in a day and a half

  9. Middle School Training • 10-hour workshop for teachers and youth leaders of students in grades 6-8 • Curriculum focuses on “Street wise” on-bike skills Personal Health Bike maintenance Community Transportation

  10. Bike’N Ped Driver Ed • Teacher and student-friendly materials for driver education classes • Focus on responsibilities of motorists to obey the laws • Etiquette of sharing the road safely with bicyclists and pedestrians

  11. Community Workshops • Emphasizes traffic and bicycle safety skills and rules of the road • 8-hour one day workshop for community leaders • Teaches how to implement a successful bicycle rodeo
