Climate How does climate impact life on earth?
Weather vs. Climate “If you don’t like the weather, wait five minutes” “If you don’t like the climate, move”
What affects climate? • Latitude: areas close to the equator have warmest climates • Receive more solar energy per unit of surface area than locations at north or south (rays perpendicular vs ‘spread out’ • Altitude: temperature decreases as altitude increases
What affects climate? • Bodies of water • Specific heat: amount of thermal energy (joules0 needed to raise the temperature of 1 kg of a material by 1C • Climate along coastlines are constant than in the middle of the continent
Tropical climate • Warm year round • High precipitation • Mild climate: • Warm summers, mild winters • High precipitation • Humid
Polar climate • Cold year round • Minimal precipitation • Continental climate • Warm summers, cold winters • Moderate precipitation • Dry climate • Hot summers, cooler winters • Very low precipitation
Temperature and precipitation • Climograph= a graphical representation of mean annual temperature and precipitation
Adaptations • reduced leaves • thickened waxy cuticle • reduced number of stomata • succulence: stems specialized for water storage maximizes retention of water available during infrequent rains
Today • Read Lesson 1 & 2. Take notes on Lesson 2. • Work on SF project or weather project.
