  2. The Renaissance came after the Middle Ages. Renaissance is a French word that means rebirth. It was a time of political, social, economic & cultural change. People again became interested in Ancient Greek and Roman “stuff.” A Time of Rebirth

  3. The Renaissance began in Florence, Italy. From there it spread north to the rest of Europe. Why? People were interested in Ancient Rome-Italy was home to Rome. Many Italian city-states had money. Wealthy merchant promoted education & the arts. Why Italy???

  4. Florence Florence, Italy symbolized the Renaissance. Today it is like an outdoor museum. The most important family was the de’Medici family—rich bankers--they were the Hilton’s, Gates’ &, Trump’s, of the day!

  5. de’Medici—Bling-Bling • The de’Medici family was not only rich but powerful—they even controlled the government! Imagine Paris Hilton running the White House???!!! • The most famous de’Medici’s were Cosimo and his grandson “Lorenzo the Magnificent.” • They were patrons or supporters of the arts.

  8. Education & Humanism • People began questioning religion and turned to science for answers. • The humanists believe that education should awaken creativity! • The main areas of study were; grammar, speech, poetry, history, Greek, & Latin.

  9. Viva the Arts • Many famous artists came from the Renaissance! In fact ALL of the Ninja Turtles!!

  10. Leonardo da Vinci • Painted the Mona Lisa & The Last Supper. • Discovered how bones & muscles worked. • Drew plans for early flying machines & submarines. • Interested in science, engineering, music, architecture, etc. This was way ahead of his time. He was the True Renaissance Man.

  12. Donatello • Donatello was a famous sculptor. • His sculptures were very lifelike.

  13. Raphael • Best known for religious art.

  14. …and last but not least--Michelangelo • He was a lot like da Vinci. • His most famous works are the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in Rome, The dome of St. Peter’s Cathedral in the Vatican, The David, and The Pietá which is in the Vatican. • Michelangelo was a genius but was also a bit of a playboy & a heavy drinker.

  15. Sistine Chapel • Michelangelo lost some his eyesight painting this because the paint dripped into his eyes.

  18. The Pietá -This is in the church where the pope was just buried • The Pietá is A sculpture with Mary holding Jesus.

  19. Swiss Guard uniforms • Michelangelo also designed the uniforms for the pope’s guards. They still wear these today.

  20. Other famous Renaissance figures • Niccolò Macchiavelli-a writer who believed rulers must do whatever necessary to control the people—even if he was a Hitler-like person. He wrote a book about it called The Prince. • His theory was that it was better to be feared than loved.

  21. Architecture • Filippo Brunelleschi-He designed the dome of the cathedral in Florence.
