  4. Amerigo Vespucci Italian Sought a trade route to Asia Because of his description and insight of the lands he saw, a German mapmaker named the continent after him.

  5. Ferdinand Magellan Portuguese, funded by Spain Planned to reach Asia by going around South America with 5 ships Magellan was killed in the Philippines One of his ships reached Spain and became the first ship that had sailed around the world.

  6. Francisco Pizarro Spanish conquistador Conquered the Incas, primarily for their land and gold (treasures) Land that was conquered is now Peru

  7. Henry Hudson English, sailed for Denmark (Dutch) Sought a trade route to China Landed on the coast of now New York and sailed up the Hudson River His crew put him off the ship!
