Symptoms • Chagas disease occurs in two stages: • An acute stage, which happens shortly after an initial infection • Chronic stage, which develops over many years. • Acute stage symptoms: fever, fatigue, body aches, headache, rash, loss of appetite, diarrhea and vomiting. • The chronic stage affects the nervous system, digestive system and the heart.
Treatment • Treatment for chagas disease depends on the stage of the disease and the age of the patient. • Prescription drugs may eliminate or reduce the number of parasites in the body.
Other Facts • Greater chance of getting chagas if: • You live in Mexico, Central America or South America. • You have stayed in a house with a thatched roof or with walls that have cracks or crevices. • You get chagas disease after the kissing bug bites and poops. The germs that cause chagas disease are in the bug’s feces. People tend to scratch the bite and therefore it causes for the feces to get into the bloodstream. • It can also be spread from mother to baby; blood transfusion; and from an organ transplant. • It is not spread from usual person-to-person contact.
