  7. Conducting Research • Participating in faculty-mentored research is a privilege • Respect work and time of your mentor and of OSEEL staff

Handbook Review • The goals of the Research Rookies Program are to: • Engage students in faculty-mentored research • Provide a positive learning environment • Help students pursue their goals • Introduce students to research • Give students the opportunity to meet other driven young people • Give students the opportunity to present at Undergraduate Research and Artistry Day

  9. Peer Leaders • Peer Leaders are responsible for: • Assisting with questions/concerns • Obtaining progress reports • Coordinating group activity • Notifying OSEEL staff of any issues

  10. Faculty Mentors • Faculty mentors are expected to: • Provide learning resources and necessary tools • Meet with the student • Attend the Faculty Mentor Orientation Luncheon • Assist the student with preparation for URAD • Attend URAD • Notify OSEEL staff of any issues

  11. Meeting Information • Meetings are mandatory • If you cannot attend a meeting, notify OSEELbefore missed meeting • Each unexcused absence will result in 10% stipend deduction • More than 3 unexcused absences will result in dismissal

  15. Reception • To honor students and mentors in Research Rookies program • Students will be asked to give “elevator speech” about their research

  16. UG Research & Artistry Day • University-wide event for all students who participated in research and artistry to present their work • Judged event • In Holmes Student Center, Duke Ellington Ballroom on Tuesday, April 22, 2014

  17. Time Commitment • Research Rookies should expect to spend 5-10 hours per week conducting research • If this is a problem, contact OSEEL ASAP!

  18. Blog • All Research Rookies are required to blog about their experience • Blog prompts will be given at meetings • Upload pictures

  19. Stipend • Students will receive stipend, ONLY if: • Present at URAD • In good academic standing • Have less than 3 meeting absences during school year

  21. Plagiarism • Presenting another’s work as your own, even if by accident, is a serious violation of university policy and the Student Code of Conduct • Plagiarism will not be tolerated in Research Rookies program and is grounds for dismissal from the program

  24. Finding a Faculty Mentor • If you have any questions or concerns with this process, communicate with OSEEL early and often • Students are expected to work with faculty (not instructors, staff, administrators, graduate assistants, teaching assistants, research assistants, etc.)

  25. Emailing Faculty: Do Dear Dr. Smith, My name is Rachel Tripodi and I am an incoming freshman at NIU. I have also been accepted to the Huskie Research Rookies Program. I have been reviewing your faculty profile on the Psychology Department’s website and am very interested in the work that you are currently doing on child development. Part of the Research Rookies Program is to find a faculty mentor who will help guide me through the research process and, based on the research you are currently conducting, I feel I would be a great match for your lab. I would like to set up a meeting with you to discuss this possibility in greater detail. I am available to meet on Monday and Wednesday from 10:00am-3:00pm. I look forward to hearing from you soon.
