Extra food led to increase in trade and population

  3. II. Cities and Trade • City Life 1. China’s capital city of the Tang was Chang’an 2. Due to trade, there was a mix of cultures and religion 3. Song capital, Keifeng, also had a large population

  4. Trade in China and Beyond • China became very wealthy • Grand Canal allowed the Chinese to move goods and crops from farms to cities • Foreign trade increased on land. The #1 item was silk • During the Song, maritime trade increased, porcelain grew as another valuable product. • This helped create a strong economy

  5. III. Arts and Inventions • Artists and Poets 1. Wu Daozi – artist 2. Li Bo and Du Fu – poets 3. Li Qingzhou – literature 4. Tang and Song artists worked on clay and porcelain

  6. Important Inventions • Han Dynasty – paper, magnetic compass • Tang Dynasty – woodblock printing, porcelain, gunpowder • Song Dynasty – moveable type, paper money, gunpowder
