Candidates from civil, mechanical, electrical, electronics & telecommunication disciplines of engineering are eligible to appear in this exam. ESE exam pattern 2023 comprises three di?erent phases: ?. Preliminary Examination - 500 marks ?. Mains Examination - 600 marks ?. In this stage, the candidates appear for the objective-type paper. This examination consists of two objective-type papers, carrying a maximum of 500 marks. The first paper comprises 200, while the second of 300 marks. Paper-I comprises General Studies and Engineering Aptitude Paper. The paper- II is the specific paper of the engineering discipline. The objectives asked in the preliminary are multiple-choice questions (MCQs). That means, every question consists of four alternatives of each question. In paper 1, 100 questions will be there. For the second paper, 150 questions will be there. Moreover, there are some negative markings as well. For every wrong answer, 1/3rd marks will be deducted. Additionally, if any candidate selects more than one option for a particular question, then it will be considered wrong. Thus, the marks will be reduced in this scenario as well. In this phase, the selected candidates appear for conventional paper writing. The
number of candidates selected for the main stage depends on the number of vacancies per year. Generally, the selected candidates for the mains are about six to seven times the total expected vacancies. Similar to the pre-exam, the mains also consists of two papers. Here, both papers carry 300 marks each. That means the main exam consists of a total of 600 marks. Both of the exams consist of questions from opted engineering disciplines. The engineering disciplines are Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics & Telecommunications. In both the papers of the main examination, eight questions will be there. Out of those, candidates have to appear in any 5 of their choice. Each question weighs 60 marks, thus it needs a detailed and to-the-point solution. For the wrong answers, there is no negative marking in this exam. But in case of illegible handwriting, the checker may deduct up to 5% of marks. Moreover, candidates will get an upper hand for exact and to-the-point answers. Phase 3- Personality Test The third and final stage of the ESE exam is the personality test i.e., a personal interview. The qualified students from the mains round appear for the personal interview. The motive of the personality test is to examine the following skills in a candidate: Leadership capacity Mental calibre or alertness Intellectual & initiative curiosity Physical & mental strength Integrity of character Practical applications For an interview, there is no boundation of time. It may di?er candidate-to- candidate. Most importantly, this interview alone comprises 200 marks. That’s why it is a very tough and crucial stage of this examination.
