Details • It was an organized effort to encourage moderation in the consumption of alcohol. • The people who started the movement were mostly women with their children who had endured the effects of uncontrolled drinking by many of their men. • In the 1800’s, alcohol was blamed for many of society’s problems, among them severe health problems, destitution and crime. First, they used moral suasion to address the problem.

  3. CONT. The movement was in unrest in which other social ills, like slavery, neglect, and ill-treatment of people, were addressed by liberals and conservatives. - As the larger temperance groups took on political power, their strategy changed from moral suasion to agitation for government control of liquor.

  5. Outcome of the movement • The 18th Amendment was passed because of the Temperance Movement. Section 1 of the 18th Amendment- “After one year from the ratification of this article the manufacture, sale, or transportation of intoxicating liquors within, the importation thereof into, or the exportation thereof from the United States and all territory subject to the jurisdiction thereof for beverage purposes is hereby prohibited.”

  6. Cont • The 21st Amendment was passed because of the Temperance Movement. Section 2 of the 21st Amendment- “The transportation or importation into any State, Territory, or possession of the United States for delivery or use therein of intoxicating liquors, in violation of the laws thereof, is hereby prohibited.”

  7. Results • The 21st Amendment was passed because of the Temperance Movement. Section 2 of the 21st Amendment- “The transportation or importation into any State, Territory, or possession of the United States for delivery or use therein of intoxicating liquors, in violation of the laws thereof, is hereby prohibited.” • Temperance reforms are still around today. The most famous one is Alcoholics Anonymous.
