  3. Getting started • After father died, began singing next to cabarets • Started being small parts in moving theatres and vaudevilles • First big break, “Alexander’s Ragtime Band” in 1911

  4. Education • Dropped out of school • Never formally trained • Never learned how to read or write music • Had to employ transcriptors • Used a “transposing piano”

  5. Contributions • God Bless America – 1918 • Annie Get Your Gun – 1946 -“Anything You Can Do (I Can Do Better)” • “There’s No Business Like Show Business” • White Christmas • Written for 18 movies and 19 Broadway shows

  6. Influence • Influenced by music in saloons and a wide range of worldly music • Influenced the integrated musical, in which dialogue, song, and dance serve to develop the plot and character
